Grainger Rooms
Grainger Rooms is housed in Higham Place; Sir Richard Grainger’s first commissioned build in Newcastle and the beginning of his work to create the city’s grand Georgian centre during the 1830s and 1840s.
He was only 20 when Higham Place was commissioned and, it being the days before his name had been made, he was initially snubbed by the local building fraternity who believed him to be under qualified. However, he famously worked 18-hour shifts to make the project work. Thus, Higham Place became the benchmark for Georgian housing in Newcastle and Grainger’s critics were silenced. The rest, as they say, is history.
